wow, he's still pushing for it? I'd like to see Cuchara reopened before someone tries another Front Range ski area. They'll be faced with the same snow problems as Cuchara and have to build everything from scratch. just my opinion though... _________________ -Brad

from CBS Colo Spgs
| Quote: | COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A former broadband company executive wants to open a ski resort on Pikes Peak.
John Ball has proposed buying a $4 million, 320-acre parcel on the famous mountain for the ski area, resort and condominiums.
Ball is the former chief executive of Boulder-based Eller Industries. He told The Gazette newspaper in Thursday's editions that the area would be similar to Eldora near Boulder.
Property owner Harvey Carter says Ball has 30 days to provide $1 million in earnest money. Carter says he has another prospective buyer if the deal with Ball collapses.
The proposal would need approval from Teller County and the U.S. Forest Service.
Ball is hoping to break ground by 2010 with an opening a year later. |

TELLER COUNTY - A local developer wants to build a ski resort on the west side of Pikes Peak, but many wonder if it even works in Southern Colorado.
John Ball of Boulder tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 he plans to buy 320 acres of land for $4 million near The Crags Campground on the western slope of Pikes Peak. He says his plans includes building 27 condos pending approval from the U.S. Forest Service and Teller County.
Ball wants to make the resort completely environmentally friendly. He says his plans are only in the beginning stages but he believes it's moving in the right direction to make the ski resort a reality.
Ball's proposal has already sparked debate and excitement in Colorado Springs, especially after previous ski runs have failed in the area in the past. The runs near the Broadmoor Hotel and runs near Glen Cove on Pikes Peak failed to survive.
Still, tourism experts with Experience Colorado Springs Pikes Peak believe now is the right time to give a ski resort another chance in Southern Colorado.
"We're out of the snow drought, we had a great snow pack this year and we're hopeful that that continues," Experience Colorado Springs Pikes Peak's Amy Long says.
Long believes other small ski resorts around Colorado are growing in popularity, and tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 that it's time for Southern Colorado to jump on board. She also thinks a ski resort will ensure Colorado Springs continues to be considered a serious vacation destination for Colorado and out of state tourists.
"Having a major attraction that brings people in winter time will be a huge boost to this area."
Still others believe a new ski resort won't succeed.
"I think the real problem is always going to be snow, we simply do not have as much snow as the high altitude resorts near the Continental Divide or on the western slope," Colorado Springs Business Journal writer John Hazlehurst says.
Hazlehurst says a new resort would probably have to make snow and in order to do that would have to obtain water rights.
Hazlehurst believes past attempts at ski resorts or runs in the Southern Colorado area failed because they were not commercialized ventures.
Ball's proposal is unique, however, as it includes a plan for at least one condo building and possibly more to come. However, Ball says he will wait for approval from Teller County and the U.S. Forest Service.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service says once it receives an official proposal, the service will probably begin an environmental impact analyses to study the impacts a ski resort could have on the environment. |

wow, surprised someone with money is looking at this... can't wait to see what happens (note: John Ball, the perspective buyer is the other guy in the youtube vid adam posted)
I decided to check out Harvey's land via mapquest, using this gazette article i clipped a decade ago as a guide:
http://www.geocities.com/coskihistory/sentinel_1.jpg
here is the cleared areas on his property, county road 62 dead ends there (white line):
its hard to tell what is a natural medow & what Harvey has cut as runs, to the left of the road might be a planned liftline?? to give perspective on where this is:
Even though its on a diferent face of Pike's, its pretty crazy that its only about 2 miles from the closed ski area.

one more article from KKTV:
http://www.kktv.com/home/headlines/15842357.html#
There is a video of the TV news story there too, looks like the news story used some images from our pikes peak ski area page
| Quote: | Could Pike's Peak be the next ski resort? If one local man's 50 year long dream comes true, it will.
There are still a lot of details to be worked out. First, the land owner, Harvey Carter, has to sell his property to a developer. He owns 320 acres on the west side of Pikes Peak.
"I already have 6 ski trails cut," Carter said. He’s turned some of his property into his own ski mountain. He hopes of growing it into a resort.
“I learned to ski on Pikes Peak," said Carter. From 1939-1984, the north side of the mountain had a few ski runs, but trail maintenance was costly and snow was sparse at times.
The west side apparently gets more snow, about 10-12 feet of fresh powder every year.
A one lane dirt road makes getting to the proposed resort is difficult. The U.S. Forest Service said if the idea is approved, they'll have to widen it.
"I think it’ll be great to have in our backyard,” Jim Rhea said. He runs a ranch nearby. He said he wouldn't mind the added traffic heading to the slopes.
“I think it’s great for the community. We won't have to commute."
Teller County Commissioners also have to give the thumb’s up before any kind of building can start. |
"6 ski trails cut"?? Coloskihistory challenge! take a crack at guessing where they are, photoshop my picture & repost! maybe google earth 3D would give a better perspective on slope... |

Ski-area plan still alive
The Gazette reported in February 2008 that Boulder investor John Ball was looking at building a small ski area near the Crags on the west side of Pikes Peak. When Ball didn't make a deadline to pay the landowner, many figured the deal was dead - but maybe not.
Ball confirmed last week that he hired Joe Napoleon, former Woodland Park senior planner and Woodland Park Downtown Development Authority head, to be the proposed ski area's vice president of planning and development. Ball said he is looking at other property purchases and will submit a full development plan once they are in place. |

It would definitely make more revenue for the cog railway if the area in question goes near the summit of the peak! _________________ Fantasy time traveler |

In the planning stages but rapidly gaining momentum now, The Resort at Pikes Peak will be America's newest and greenest ski resort. It will be located on the west side of Pikes Peak off of Hwy 67 near The Craggs and Meuller State Park, 10 miles north of Cripple Creek.
We're passionate about being good stewards of America's Mountain. The ultimate goal is to build a self-sustaining, energy-generating facility completely off the energy grid. It will be a wonderful addition to the area, bringing year-round family recreational opportunities along with much-needed jobs and tax revenue.
Our research shows a high approval rating, but we need this thing to "go viral" now. That's why I'm encouraging you to get everyone you can to visit our website, facebook, and twitter pages to get involved. A "Name a Ski Run" contest will be starting soon. Let's do this together!
