I took an end of the season/Easter weekend trip to Aspen. I was expecting sunny weather based on reports from earlier in the week, but the weather was anything but that.
On Saturday I skied Aspen Highlands, which closed this past Sunday. Conditions were outstanding with about 8" of fresh snow on the upper mountain. Crowds were minimal, even with powder on the final weekend of the year. The Steeplechase area was great, despite its southern exposure and it being April! I wanted to hike the Highland Bowl but the weather was rather foggy with gusty winds. Despite that, Highlands had a great closing weekend.
The following day I skied Aspen Mountain. The ski area had a nice Easter service at the Sundeck Lodge atop the ski area. I figure that has to be one of the nicest places (with the exception of Red Rocks maybe) to hold a service outside. The conditions on the mountain were great again. They had another 6-8" of new snow overnight with no crowds at all. I was skiing in powdery conditions all the way until I left around 3pm. Surprisingly, they were running the Bell Mountain lift despite the mountain being empty.
Overall, Aspen is a sweet place to ski!
