Years of operation, c.1960-1966
Like Hayden's Hospital Hill, Capitol Hill in Oak Creek appears to have
been one of Gordon L. Wren's projects to provide inexpensive or free
skiing for youngsters. Through the efforts of "Gordy," a rope tow was
acquired from a defunct ski hill in Tabernash. (Research project, anyone?)
The tow was about 600 feet long with an electric motor drive at the top.
The hill was on city property and skiers were allowed to start the tow as
needed and shut it down when through for the day. No admission was
charged. Information and period photos courtesy of Oak Creek historian,
Mike Yurick. My present day photo was taken from Highway 131 just
below the high school and in line with the Oak Creek Motel on the south
edge of town.
The tow was moved to Cowboy Peak on the Sweetland Ranch just north
of town where it operated till 1985. See heading under Cowboy Peak.
